Abstract: We reviewed the occurrences and distributional patterns of migratory species of birds in Brazil. A species was classified as migratory when at least part of its population performs cyclical, seasonal movements with high fidelity to its breeding grounds. Of the 1,919 species of birds recorded in Brazil, 198 (10.3%) are migratory. Of these, 127 (64%) were classified as Migratory and 71 (36%) as Partially Migratory. A few species (83; 4.3%) were classified as Vagrant and eight (0,4%) species could not be defined … Show more

“…Patterns of migratory activity were classified according to Somenzari et al (2018), with some changes. We considered migratory species (MGT) as those that leave their territory after the reproductive season and return to the same area after a cyclical period.…”

“…The Brazilian coast serves as an important stopover site for migratory birds coming from the northern hemisphere. Several species migrate during the austral winter from Argentina and Chile to Central Bolívia and Brazil (Somenzari et al 2018). In addition, several birds, including passeriformes, migrate from the US, Mexico, and Central America to northern Brazil (Somenzari et al 2018).…”

“…Migrant species followed the list of migratory birds of Brazil (Somenzari et al, 2018) and were classified in three categories as follows: "Nearctic migrants" breed in the Northern Hemisphere and move southward to spend the austral winter (Chesser, 1994); "Austral migrants" breed in austral regions of South America and move northward to spend the austral winter (Chesser, 1994) and; "Neotropical migrants" breed in our study area and move northward to spend the austral winter in tropical humid regions (Belton, 1994). We considered species of conservation concern those listed in at least one redlist in global (GL) (IUCN, 2015), national (BR) (MMA, 2014) and/or local (SC) levels (CONSEMA, 2011).…”
