An Overdensity of Galaxies atz= 5.9 + 0.2 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field Confirmed Using the ACS Grism

Abstract: We present grism spectra taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) to identify 29 red sources with (i 775 À z 850 ) ! 0:9 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Of these, 23 are found to be galaxies at redshifts between z ¼ 5:4 and 6.7, identified by the break at 1216 8 due to intergalactic medium (IGM) absorption; two are late-type dwarf stars with red colors; and four are galaxies with colors and spectral shapes similar to dust-reddened or old galaxies at redshifts z % 1 2. This constitutes the larges… Show more

“…Spectra of galaxies in the GOODS-South field were obtained by several different observational campaigns: the two most extended ones were conducted by ESO with FORS2 (Vanzella et al 2006(Vanzella et al , 2008(Vanzella et al , 2009) and VIMOS (Popesso et al 2009). Other redshifts were obtained with the VLT by GMASS (Kurk et al 2009), by the HST/ACS/G880L grism survey PEARS (Straughn et al 2008) and the similar GRAPES project (Pirzkal et al 2004;Malhotra et al 2005). In total there are 130 U-dropout galaxies with confirmed redshift.…”

“…In its initial 2005 HUDF campaign, the Hubble Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) used four optical filters to identify galaxies with redshifts up to 7.5, showing that the galaxy number density further declines with redshift (e.g. Malhotra et al 2005;Bouwens et al 2007;Oesch et al 2007).…”

“…As seen from this equation, even a neutral hydrogen fraction as low as 10 −5 can lead to a significant attenuation of Lyα photons at high-z , making them extremely sensitive probes of H I in the IGM. As a result, a class of high-z galaxies called Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs), detected by means of their Lyα line (at 1216Å in the rest frame), have become popular probes of reionization, with statistically significant samples available in the reionization epoch, at z 5.7 and 6.6 (Malhotra et al 2005;Taniguchi et al 2005;Shimasaku et al 2006;Hu et al 2010;Kashikawa et al 2006;Ouchi et al 2010;Kashikawa et al 2011). Indeed, a number of theoretical papers have used semi-analytic (e.g.…”
