Abstract: BackgroundOverviews of systematic reviews are a relatively new approach to synthesising evidence, and research methods and associated guidance are developing. Within this paper we aim to help readers understand key issues which are essential to consider when taking the first steps in planning an overview. These issues relate to the development of clear, relevant research questions and objectives prior to the development of an overview protocol.MethodsInitial discussions and key concepts for this paper were for… Show more

“…The burgeoning number of systematic reviews has encouraged the development of an umbrella or overview of reviews to summarise and appraise the aggregation or configuration of multiple research syntheses. 61,62 Umbrella reviews of quantitative, qualitative or mixed evidence usually consider the effects of exposure to diseases or effectiveness of interventions. They have been used constructively to identify sources of heterogeneity or diversity in observational studies of populations, diagnostic tests, and rare or adverse clinical advents.…”

“…To our knowledge, these will be the first overview of the perspectives of patients and their caregivers on SM interventions for any of these four chronic conditions using a mixed-methods approach 26 . We will follow the most updated methodological guidance for overviews [27][28][29][30][31][32][33][34] .…”

“…We will conduct four mixed-methods overviews of SRs according to the most updated methodological guidance from the Cochrane Collaboration [27][28][29] , the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) 30 and key methodological references [31][32][33][34] . We adhere to the applicable items of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) statement 35 .…”

“…We carried out an overview of SRs of interventional randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Overview of SRs (systematic review of systematic reviews) is a study in which multiple SRs on a related topics are systematically searched, appraised and synthesized in order to present results of related SRs (Hunt, Pollock, Campbell, Estcourt, & Brunton, 2018).…”
