“…50 Because each of the samples examined here were collected from a single source and at a single point in time (i.e., as grab samples), additional collection and testing across various sites, climate conditions, and times of year are needed to fully assess water quality differences between geographic locations. While grab sampling has been commonly used for effect-based studies of water samples 16,51,52 and provides a varied snapshot of the water sources profiled here, composite or passive sampling may further increase confidence in the quantitative differences observed between water treatments. Additionally, while a breast cancer cell line was employed as a proof-of-principle for applying high-throughput transcriptomics toward water sample profiling, this cell line is highly sensitive toward compounds causing estrogenic effects, whereas other cell lines may be more sensitive toward other key modes-of-action.…”

“…The WFD is an extensive legislative framework for the protection of ground and surface waters in Europe, with defined Environmental Quality standards (EQS) for several parameters [biological, chemical, physicochemical (supporting biological elements), and hydromorphological elements] that must be complied by the different member states, and also advise additional monitoring of substances of national or regional interest [1]. However, it is estimated that a very high number of substances are present in the environment, and for Europe, it is estimated the existence of more than 100,000 compounds [4,5]. Therefore, the definition of these lists of compounds with environmental concern, although relevant, becomes unreliable, in terms of representation in aquatic ecosystems, since complex mixtures of chemicals occur (e.g., emerging pollutants, metabolites, and transformation products).…”

“…biological responses of organisms to natural waters) has been successful in the identification of ecotoxicological risks in surface waters and the ranking of locations based on these risks, namely for natural water bodies (e.g. rivers, transitional or coastal waters) [5,6,11], but also to heavily modified water bodies (e.g. reservoirs) [8][9][10].…”
