An In Vitro Evaluation of the Molecular Mechanisms of Action of Medical Plants from the Lamiaceae Family as Effective Sources of Active Compounds against Human Cancer Cell Lines

Abstract: It is predicted that 1.8 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed worldwide in 2020; of these, the incidence of lung, colon, breast, and prostate cancers will be 22%, 9%, 7%, and 5%, respectively according to the National Cancer Institute. As the global medical cost of cancer in 2020 will exceed about $150 billion, new approaches and novel alternative chemoprevention molecules are needed. Research indicates that the plants of the Lamiaceae family may offer such potential. The present study reviews selected s… Show more

“…For this reason, the plant kingdom is being extensively investigated in search of possible preventive or anti-cancer agents. The literature contains numerous examples of plant extracts with anticancer activity [ 29 , 30 ], and in particular the Lamiaceae family could represent an effective source of active compounds against cancer cell lines [ 31 ].…”

“…Other food-related bioactive compounds that have been proven to have antiproliferative activity against lung, colon, breast, and prostate cancer cells are terpenoids and volatile oils (EOs) from Lamiaceae species [59]. Proving these, in vitro pharmacological studies on the volatile oils (EOs) extracted from the aerial part of lavender species (Lavandula hybrid Rev., Lavandula latifolia Medikus., Lavandula vera D.C. and Lavandula angustifolia Miller cultivated in Bulgaria), MTS test on Caco-2 cells and Caco-2 cell morphology analysis by electron microscopy before and after the treatment with EOs, respectively, both experiments have been confirmed to have augmented cytotoxic effects of EOs on the colon cancer, and at the same time better effectiveness of EOs in comparison with the separate constituents (e.g., linalool and 1,8-cineole), explained by their synergistic and more selective effect [60].…”
