An ICT4D project for promoting health awareness programmes in indigenous community

Abstract: Although, ICTs can contribute to the development of indigenous people and help them with the exchange of health information, some researchers still remain unconvinced about the direct contribution of ICTs to indigenous people, especially in health and poverty alleviation. It has been found that indigenous peoples in developing countries have limited access to ICT and digital information. In addition, indigenous peoples are often deprived in terms of capabilities required for effective utilization of ICTs. Bang… Show more

“…Reflecting on these challenges and on previous HCI4D research understanding rural women's needs, our study extends existing research on digital maternal health [72,99,111,138,141,144], indigenous communities [8,57] and postcolonial computing [136] as the health needs and experiences in LATAM contexts still remain poorly understood in HCI4D and health research [20,135].…”

“…Most digital health initiatives focus on helping community health workers to gather accurate data during home visits, enhance screening and information-seeking practices, visualization of tasks and facilitate communication with women [34,35,76,104,145]. While the digital transformation in maternal health is opening up opportunities for HCI research for development (HCI4D) in South Africa [28,50,100,133], Kenya [113,114], Pakistan [12,99,127], India [35,64,72,73], Bangladesh [138], Lebanon [140,141], Uganda and Tanzania [68], there is limited research looking at women's experiences during pregnancy complications [12] and among indigenous communities [8,57] and Latin America as a region remains unexplored for HCI4D research in healthcare [19,135].…”

“…We designed the study in the model of participatory action research (PAR) [21]. This was selected over, for example, an ICT4D (ICT for development) approach [13,32], which might have run the risk of appearing more interventional than we aimed to be. We drew particularly upon HayesÕ description of PAR in HCI [12], applying the action research spiral of ÔplanningÕ, ÔactingÕ and ÔreflectingÕ to a process of iteratively handing-over control, over the course of five video productions.…”

“…Similarly in Human Computer Interaction or discipline in which the cultural dimension is often associated with ICT4D lines that tend to be associated with developing ethics and society. However, most of the cultural dimension is taken into account in terms of physical ability and facilities in technology use [26], [27], [28].…”
