An Experimental Study on Synthetic Gas (Syngas) Production through Gasification of Indonesian Biomass Pellet

Abstract: The research was purposed to produce environmentally friendly biomass pellets as syngas fuel. The produced pellets dimension is 18 mm to 25 mm (length) and 4.5 mm (diameter). The best pellets made from single material is palm shell pellets with gasification time of 85 min · kg -1 biomass. The best pellets made from material mix is sugarcane bagasse and palm shell pellets, with similar gasification time. The palm shell pellets met the standard except for ash content. Pellets made from mixed material have less c… Show more

“…Poland does not have its own standards defining the quality of biomass used for energy purposes. "Noble biomass", a term commonly used by power engineers, refers to pellets made from various types of biomass and is defined based on compliance with the German standard DIN 51731 [59], which applies to natural wood pellets [60].…”

“…A small-scale bio-pellet production facility using empty fruit bunches waste from palm oil mill has shown a good economic feasibility, which can compete with the biomass briquets, wood and coal selling prices in the local market in Indonesia [90]. It was shown experimentally that high quality wood pellets can increase the efficiency of gasification and the quality of the gas product considerably [91]. For low-quality raw biomass with high moisture content (above 50%) such as bagasse waste from sugar production industry, low temperature torrefaction (at 150°C) was found to be feasible with acceptable product quality that can be used efficiently for gasification or direct combustion [92].…”

“…Biomass gasification process of converting the biomass with a mixture of combustion and noncombustion gas to produce a gas. In other word biomass gasification mean incomplete combustion [16]. The thermal-conversion of the gasification is below 40% combustion.…”
