An electrophysiological survey of joint receptors in the walking legs of the scorpion,Paruroctonus mesaensis

Abstract: Summary. 1. Scorpion walking legs~are comprised of seven true segments: coxa, trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, tarsus, and pretarsus. Leg and joint positions are illustrated at the limits of protraction and retraction ( Fig. 1).2. For all but the coxa-trochanter joint, proprioceptive discharge over a range of settings and for different rates of movement was recorded (Figs. 2-8). From such recordings, estimates were made of the number of tonic and phasic proprioceptive elements monitoring each joint (Table 1)… Show more

“…They live for many years (Polis & Farley, in press b) and are sufficiently large so that they can be studied easily in the field and the laboratory. In recent years, considerable attention has been given to scorpions in studies of physiological ecology (Yokota, 1978), sensory physiology and related behaviour (Bowerman, 1976;Brownell, 1977), biochemistry (Hadley & Jackson, 1977), and behavioural (Hadley & Williams, 1968;Polis & Farley, in press a ) and population ecology (Fox, 1976;Polis & Farley in press b ;Polis, in prep. a, 6).…”
