An Electronic-Nose Sensor Node Based on a Polymer-Coated Surface Acoustic Wave Array for Wireless Sensor Network Applications

Abstract: This study developed an electronic-nose sensor node based on a polymer-coated surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor array. The sensor node comprised an SAW sensor array, a frequency readout circuit, and an Octopus II wireless module. The sensor array was fabricated on a large K2 128° YX LiNbO3 sensing substrate. On the surface of this substrate, an interdigital transducer (IDT) was produced with a Cr/Au film as its metallic structure. A mixed-mode frequency readout application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) w… Show more

“…They provide responses combining outputs from arrays of non-specific chemical sensors to produce fingerprints which are often statistically analyzed using multivariate analysis or neural network techniques. 24,25 They are frequently assembled by sets of metal oxide (MOSFET), surface acoustic wave (SAW) 26,27 or quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) 28,29 gas sensors.…”

“…The center frequency of the SAW sensor was determined to be approximately 114 MHz [10]. The surface of the piezoelectric substrate was coated with a thin film of polymer, and the size of SAW sensor is 14 × 7.4 mm 2 .…”

“…Surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based gas sensors have the advantages of high sensitivity and fast response [9,10]. Readout circuits for SAW sensors have been developed for years; however, the corresponding power consumption is high and the data resolution is not sufficient for detecting gases at low concentration [11,12].…”

“…This paper presents the design of a two-layer hybrid navigation system for a quadrotor, called MF-BUG2, used to compute online and follow a path between a start and goal position in a multi-floor indoor scenario. The goal must be associated with some salient cue (visual, electromagnetical, olfactory [8]). The lower layer is based on the well-known BUG2 algorithm that implements a local navigation approach, as discussed before, and is responsible for navigating in the horizontal plane.…”
