ABSTRACT:In this study, veterinary students and veterinary educators from Firat Veterinary School, Istanbul Veterinary School and Selcuk Veterinary School were surveyed to evaluate their a�itudes to animal use in research. Data were collected from 330 students and 204 educators by personal interviews. All participants showed anthropocentric a�itudes toward animal use in research. Most of the participants agreed on items regarding the animal tests being easier, more scientific, more common, more economical and more reliable than alternative methods, but they also signified that they did not agree with the item indicating that the animal experimentation is more conscience. In conclusion, we can state that both the veterinary students and the educators are in a complete dilemma in the discussions regarding the animal experimentation. In order to avoid the negative circumstances that can arise from this dilemma, it could be said that veterinary schools should be supported in this aspect with related courses to be included within their curriculum.

As members of the public and the veterinary profession are increasingly concerned about animal welfare, there has been an increased scholarly interest in the attitudes of veterinarians and students toward animals, as these may impact human behavior, which ultimately impacts animal welfare. Here we investigated Italian veterinary students’ demographic data and perceptions about nonhuman animal welfare issues that might be predictive of their attitudes. A survey eliciting information about demographics, knowledge, experience, and perceptions regarding different categories of animals, and including the Animal Attitude Scale (AAS), was administered to undergraduate veterinary medicine students in three Italian universities. Data were analyzed using nonparametric tests, and a value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. In total, 876 students completed the questionnaire, with females (75.1%) making up a majority of students in all years of the course. Although veterinary students showed pro-animal welfare attitudes (mean score = 64.20 ± 0.24 out of 100), the findings suggested that year of study, gender, and geographical location had a significant impact (p < 0.05). In this study, we found a set of factors that, either individually or combined, help predict a student’s attitude toward animal welfare issues, which will be useful in improving the curriculum strategy in veterinary education in Italy.

Özet: Bu çalışmada, Fırat ve Uludağ Üniversitesi Veteriner Fakültesi öğrencilerinin köpek psikolojisi konusundaki tutum ve görüşlerinin belirlenmesi amaçlandı. Bu amaçla 401 öğrenciye anket uygulandı. Verilerin istatistiksel analizi sonucunda, katılımcıların %97.3'ünün köpek psikolojisini önemseme düzeyleri açısından pozitif tutum sergiledikleri (4>); tutumları arasında ise cinsiyet, pet sahipliği ve evde köpek besleme değişkenleri yönünden anlamlı düzeyde (p<0.001) farklılık olduğu saptandı. Köpeklerde, bilişsel özelliklerden merak dürtüsü, zekâ, akıl yürütme yeteneği ve muhakeme yeteneği olduğunu kabul eden katılımcılar içerisinde Uludağ Üniversitesi öğrencilerinin oranının Fırat Üniversitesindekilerden yüksek olduğu belirlendi (p<0.001). Benzer şekilde biyolojik ve çevresel faktörlerden tüylerin kesimi (p<0.01), genetik özelikler (p<0.01) ve mevsim şartlarının (p<0.05) köpeklerin psikolojisi üzerine etkili olduğunu düşünen katılımcılar içerisinde, Uludağ Üniversitesi öğrencilerinin oranının yüksek olduğu belirlendi. The attitudes and views of Firat and Uludag University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine students on the subject of dog psychologySummary: The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes and views of Firat and Uludag University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine students on the subject of dog psychology. For this purpose a survey was applied to 401 students. Statistycal analysis showed that a positive attitude was observed (4>) concerning the care level of dog psychology by 97.3% of participants. Significant differences (p<0.001) were determined among the attitudes of participants on the variables of gender, pet ownership and having a dog as a pet. Among the participants who accepted that dogs have some cognitive features like curiosity, intelligence, reasoning ability and discernment, the proportion of Uludag University students was determined to be higher than that of the Firat University students (p<0.001). Similarly, among the participants who thought that biological and environmental factors like clipping (p<0.01), genetical properties (p<0.01) and seasonal conditions (p<0.05) are effective on the psychology of dogs, the proportion of Uludag University students was determined to be higher than that of the Firat University students. Significant relation was determined between the knowledge level of students related to dogs and the care level of dog psychology.
