“…These results illustrate the clinical importance of the vascular pattern of the tumors, but because vascular density and vascular area did not directly correlate with patients' prognosis, these results are also in contrast with previous reports that found CD34 vascular density as an independent determinant of tumor aggressiveness and prognostic biomarker for patients affected by SGTs . The use of the neoangiogenesis‐related marker CD105 could have better illustrated this process in the tumors analyzed , but to more appropriately compare our results with those previously described in the literature comparing semaphorins and neuropilins with neoplastic vascular pattern, we opted for using the pan‐endothelial marker CD34.…”

“…Although the formation of new blood vessels is widely known to represent an essential step in the progression of human cancer , the angiogenic properties of SGT have only superficially been investigated and the factors responsible for the development, or inhibition, of new blood vessel formation in SGT requires further exploration. Previous studies have demonstrated the upregulation of the pro‐angiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in salivary gland malignancies, but its prognostic and therapeutic relevance is debatable and poorly understood .…”

“…CD105 represents a suitable angiogenic marker, because it is preferentially associated with recently formed blood vessels . In the current study, we observed that the great majority of stained vessels were small and thin‐walled structures and the expression of this protein was increased in malignancies than in pleomorphic adenoma.…”

“…An important finding from all studies is that intratumoral MVD evaluation could discriminate between benign and malignant tumors and the use of CD105 antibody proved to be the best choice for this purpose. Even in two studies, CD31 [42] and CD34 [43] staining failed to reach a statistically significant difference between the two groups, this was achieved by the use of CD105. The latter has the advantage to recognize only new-formed microvessels in contrast to other endothelial markers.…”

“…The above difference reached statistical significance only when CD105 was applied as an angiogenesis marker. It was also found that SGT cases without prominent compared to those with prominent myoepithelial cells, presented higher MVD [42]. Moreover, Soares et al investigated the angiogenic switch during the malignant transformation of PA into CXPA, including PA (n = 10) and CXPA (n = 8 early and n = 8 advanced stage) cases.…”
