An analysis of a short-lived outbreak of dengue fever in Mauritius

Abstract: During the month of June 2009, Mauritius experienced a shortlived outbreak of dengue fever localised in its capital city Port Louis. Aedes albopictus, a secondary vector of dengue viruses, was the probable vector. We introduce a method which combines Google Earth images, stochastic cellular automata and scale free network ideas to map this outbreak. The method could complement other techniques to forecast the evolution of potential localised mosquito-borne viral outbreaks in Mauritius and in at-risk locations … Show more

“…Containers such as tires and those containing water-dwelling plants are then exported to new geographic Rezza et al 2007), and in France in 2010 (Gould et al 2010;Grandadam et al 2011). Aedes albopictus has also been implicated as a vector of dengue virus (DENV), causing outbreaks on La Reunion Island in 1977-1978(Coulanges et al 1979), Hawaii in 2001(Effer et al 2005, on La Reunion Island again in 2004 (Pierre et al 2005), Mauritius in June 2009 (Ramchurn et al 2009), and France and Croatia during 2010(La Ruche et al 2010Gjenero-Margan et al 2011). The cases reported in France and Croatia were the first autochthonous dengue cases to be reported in Europe since the outbreak in Greece in 1927-1928(La Ruche et al 2010.…”

“…Ae. albopictus has also been the principle vector responsible for dengue virus outbreaks in Hawaii in 2001-2002 and Mauritius in 2009 [56,57] and is a potential vector of Zika virus [58,59]. Furthermore, it can be a competent vector of WNV when experimentally tested in laboratory conditions [60] and in North America natural infections have been found.…”
