An alternative early opening scenario for the Central Atlantic Ocean

Abstract: The opening of the Central Atlantic Ocean basin that separated North America from northwest Africa is well documented and assumed to have started during the Late Jurassic. However, the early evolution and the initial breakup history of Pangaea are still debated: most of the existing models are based on one or multiple ridge jumps at the Middle Jurassic leaving the oldest crust on the American side, between the East Coast Magnetic Anomaly (ECMA) and the Blake Spur Magnetic Anomaly (BSMA). According to these hyp… Show more

“…During the Early Jurassic, multiple rifts form from north to south along the future Central Atlantic margins and inland northwestern Africa and northern South America (e.g., Labails et al, 2010). Nonmarine sediments and salt deposits accumulate in these rift basins (Olsen, 1997;Brownfield and Charpentier, 2003;Davison, 2005).…”

“…Despite the substantial amount of studies dedicated to the topic, the ages of the onset and end of rifting are debated (e.g., Sahabi et al 2004;Gouiza et al 2010;Labails et al 2010) and there exist only very few estimates on the amount of extension experienced by the margin through time.…”

“…For the timing of the Central Atlantic opening, we keep the scenario proposed by Labails et al (2010) and subsequently modified by Sibuet et al (2012), Klingelhoefer et al (2016) and Biari et al (2017). For Labails et al (2010), the first oceanic crust appears at 195 Ma (Sinemurian).…”
