An Adaptive Median Filtering of Salt and Pepper Noise based on Local Pixel Distribution

Abstract: A selective adaptive median filter is proposed for the restoration of gray scale images that are highly corrupted by salt and pepper noise. In this paper, impulse noise removal using the standard median filter and its variants are analyzed. After detecting the salt and pepper noise pixels, the self-adaptive median filter is use to find a suitable window containing more non-noise pixels. This proposed algorithm provides much better results than that of the standard median filter, weighed median filter and switc… Show more

“…In our study, like the initial window size used in other studies [30, 31, 35], the initial window size was decided to be 3×3 and the maximum allowable window size was selected to be 7×7 based on following formula [31]: Maximum window size=2N+1×2N+1 where N is the initial window size ( N = 3).…”

“…Thus, the undamaged pixel is replaced with the median value of the window. As mentioned below, when the pixel is destroyed, the impulse noise would be eliminated similarly [17].…”
