Amygdala activity related to perceived social support

Abstract: Perceived social support enhances well-being and prevents stress-related ill-being. A recent structural neuroimaging study reported that the amygdala volume is positively associated with perceived social support. However, it remains unknown how neural activity in this region and functional connectivity (FC) between this and other regions are related to perceived social support. To investigate these issues, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed to analyze the fractional amplitude of … Show more

“…Functional resting state magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) has considerable potential to predict human behavior. Using rsfMRI, resting state functional connectivity was shown to be associated with a variety of cognitive performance tasks, such as attention ( Clare Kelly et al, 2008 ), working memory ( Gordon et al, 2012 ) and fluid intelligence ( Cole et al, 2012 ), as well as emotional states ( Bush et al, 2018 ; Kim et al, 2019 ), and stress ( Chen et al, 2019 ; Nowak et al, 2020 ; Sato et al, 2020 ). Currently, no MRI system is available on the ISS.…”

“…Moreover, the protective effects of greater collective efficacy were relatively more robust than the effects of gun violenceremaining statistically significant after accounting confounded socioeconomic resources (16,36). Although most research examining the associations between environmental conditions and corticolimbic function have focused on adverse childhood experiences, our results contribute to an emerging literature highlighting the power of promotive contexts (e.g., perceptions of social support) in shaping affective brain development (37,38).…”

“…Moreover, the amygdala has also been linked to loneliness and social support. For example, a decrease in perceived stress and loneliness was moderated by amygdala volumes 34 and the experience of social support was regulated by amygdala activity 35 . Likewise, the ACC has been previously linked not only to loneliness but also to alexithymia: ACC size correlates with alexithymia ratings especially in men 36 and high levels of alexithymia are associated with elevated responses to emotional stimuli in the ACC 18 .…”
