AMR-WB+: a New Audio Coding Standard for 3rd Generation Mobile Audio Services

Abstract: Highly efficient low-rate audio coding methods are required for new compelling and commercially interesting applications of streaming, messaging and broadcasting services using audio media in 3rd generation mobile communication systems. After an audio codec selection phase 3GPP has standardized the extended AMR-WB (AMR-WB+) codec that provides unique performance at very low bit rates from below 10 kbps up to 24 kbps. This paper discusses the requirements imposed by mobile audio services and gives a technology … Show more

“…In the standard selection phase, the AMR-WB+ showed a unique performance at low bitrates from below 10kbps up to 24kbps [1]. This qualified performance is largely due to the hybrid structure integrating both the speech and transform coding techniques.…”

“…MPEG USAC은 12-64Kbps의 전송률에서 기존의 AMR-WB+ [4] 및 HE-AAC v2 [5] 에 포함된 기술들을 확장 및 수정 하여 향상된 성능을 얻도록 제정한 표준이다. MPEG USAC에서는 주파수 대역별로 부호화가 수행된다.…”

“…In an initial stage of designing the coding structure, it was not possible to acquire high-quality output to all input contents because only a single type of traditional audio or speech coding structure was adopted. The best result could be obtained by simultaneously running two types of codecs: Adaptive Multi-rate Wideband plus (AMR-WB+ [3]) for speech signals and high-efficiency advanced audio coding (HE-AAC [4]) for audio signals. In case of encoding signals with mixed characteristics, one of two coding modes is chosen depending on the characteristic of input contents.…”
