Abstract: Antibiotic prescriptions for lower respiratory tract infections occur commonly in primary care but there is uncertainty about the most effective initial treatment strategy. Both increasing antimicrobial resistance and awareness of preventable harm from medicines make resolving this uncertainty a priority.
