Abstract: Glutamate homeostasis during glutamatergic neurotransmission is predominantly maintained via functioning of the glutamate-glutamine cycle. However, the glutamate-glutamine cycle explains only the fate of the carbon atoms but not that of the accompanying transfer of nitrogen from neurons to astrocytes.
