“…However, cutaneous ulcerative lesions due to Leishmania is a frequent finding in canine leishmaniosis as well as in human leishmaniosis (Hepburn, 2003). Moreover, in the few cases of feline leishmaniosis that have been reported since the first case described by Sergent in Alger, involvement of the skin is often described as well (de Souza et al, 2005;Craig et al, 1986;Dunan et al, 1989;Barnes et al, 1993;Bonfante-Garrido et al, 1991;Laruelle-Magalon & Toga, 1996;Pennisi, 2002;Schubach et al, 2004;San Martin Mouriz Savani et al, 2004). In this context, it could be questioned whether the ulceration might have been induced firstly by the carcinoma or the parasite or both.…”

“…Παρά το σχετικά περιορισμένο αριθμό μελετών, είναι γνωστό ότι και οι γάτες μπορούν να μολυνθούν στη φύση από οκτώ τουλάχιστον είδη του γένους Leishmania (L. infantum/chagasi, L. tropica, L. major, L. amazonensis, L. mexicana, L. venezuelensis, L. braziliensis xaiL. panamensis), που συνήθως είναι τα ίδια με εκείνα που ευθύνονται για τη μόλυνση του ανθρώπου και του σκύλου στη συγκεκριμένη γεω γραφική περιοχή (Craig et al 1986, Morsy and Abou el Seoud 1994, Bonfante-Garrido et al 1996, Poli et al 2002, Mancianti 2004, Schubach et al 2004, Grevot et al 2005, Ayllon et al 2008, da Silva et al 2008, Sarkari et al 2009, Souza et al 2009, Hatam et al 2010. Όπως και στο σκύλο, ιδιαίτερη σημασία για τις μεσογειακές χώρες έχει η μόλυνση από την L. infantum, που, αν και τις περισσότερες φορές είναι ασυμπτωματική, φαίνεται ότι είναι αρκετά συχνή, γεγονός που εγείρει υποψίες για τον πιθανό ρόλο της γάτας ως «δευτερογενούς δεξαμενής» του πρω τόζωου στη φύση.…”

Among these species, three have already been isolated in Brazilian cats: L. braziliensis (SCHUBACH et al, 2004), L. amazonensis (SOUZA et al, 2005), and L. chagasi (VIDES et al, 2011), whereas L. venezuelensis (BONFANTE-GARRIDO et al, 1996) and L. mexicana (TRAINOR et al, 2010) infect cats in other countries.…”
