Amelioration of seed yield, oil content and oil quality through induced mutagenesis in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.)

Abstract: Thirty mutant lines selected from 3 widely adapted genotypes of sesame viz. Rama, SI 1666 and IC 21706 (ten from each of the three genotypes), developed by induced physical (γ-rays) and chemical (EMS) mutagens, were evaluated against their respective control genotype for yield and its important attributes in M 4 generation to reveal the ramification of mutagens for disclosing the magnitude of variation among mutants in advance generation and also to identify the promising positive mutants to refurbish new impr… Show more

“…Increased mean values in the present investigation, denoted the occurrence of more favorable mutations and breaking up of undesirable linkages with enhancing recombination. Similar results of an increase in mean value have been reported by Begum and Dasgupta (2015) and Ravichandran and Jayakumar (2018) for number of capsules per plant and seed yield per plant.…”

“…At Ishurdi mutants were also performed higher seed yields, the mutant SM-07 produced the higher seed yield of 1500kg ha -1 closely followed by the mutant SM-04 which produced 1492kg ha -1 of seed yield, like this at Chapainawabganj mutant SM-07 produced the higher seed yield of 1500kg ha -1 closely followed by mother variety Binatil-1 which produced 1458kg ha -1 of seed yield. Positive shift in mean values due to the enhancing effect of gamma-rays was also reported earlier by many research workers likes in sesame and rapeseed [21,24]. Compared with Check variety Binatil-2 at seed yield was decreased 1.12% in SM-01, 3.80% in SM-06 and 1.18% in SM-05.…”

“…Sesame is a pre-kharif crop in India and the agricultural importance is increasing as a large part of peninsular India is becoming prone to drought. Mutation breeding in crop improvement program for developing varieties with desirable agro-morphic traits is common in other crops but rarely implemented for sesame in India (Begum and Dasgupta, 2015).…”
