“…These results are quite interesting since several studies have indicated that the eye is particularly sensitive to oxidative stress and therefore, modifications of the cellular redox state of the eye have been reported to play an important role in retinal degeneration processes (17)(18)(19)(20). Additional support for the involvement of ROS and oxidative stress in photoreceptor apoptosis comes from several studies in which antioxidants appeared to retard or inhibit the degenerative pathology (21)(22)(23). However, the mechanisms of action of these anti-apoptotic molecules are unclear, and further work is necessary to resolve whether oxidative stress acts as a common mediator of retinal degeneration in retinitis pigmentosa.…”
