Alopecia areata treated with topical minoxidil

Abstract: A 1% minoxidil topical solution was used to treat 48 patients with alopecia areata, ie, 24 patients with patchy disease and 24 patients with alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis. Twenty-five patients had terminal hair regrowth; in 11 of the 25 patients, it was cosmetically acceptable. No clinical features of the disease seemed to indicate the likelihood of hair regrowth. Hair regrowth began approximately two months after the initiation of treatment and was not uniformly well maintained after the treatment … Show more

“…Although our results could appear to be unsatisfactory we want to point out that we considered as a success only patients who had a complete hair regrowth after treatment. Our percentage of complete regrowth is therefore comparable with the results obtained by other authors [6,12,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19] in the treatment of severe AA. The effectiveness of Thymopentin in AA is possibly related to the effects of this drug on the aberrant T-cell-mediated immunity as sociated with this disease.…”

“…Several photographically documented cases of alopecia areata subtotalis have been more or less suc cessfully treated with topical minoxidil [2,4], but have not shown the pattern of hair regrowth in the present case, except for 1 recently reported patient [3], In these 2 patients regrowth was observed only on the top of the scalp excluding the ophiasic area.…”

“…Mecha nisms of its action are still hypothetical. Minoxidil may enhance cutaneous blood flow in the human balding scalp [5] and act as an immunomodulator [4]. System ic action may be evoked since hair regrowth may occur at sites distant to those treated [2].…”
