ALMA polarization observations of the particle accelerators in the hotspot of the radio galaxy 3C 445

Abstract: We present Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) polarization observations at 97.5 GHz of the southern hot spot of the radio galaxy 3C 445. The hot spot structure is dominated by two bright components enshrouded by diffuse emission. Both components show fractional polarization between 30 and 40 per cent, suggesting the presence of shocks. The polarized emission of the western component has a displacement of about 0.5 kpc outward with respect to the total intensity emission, and may trace the surface of a front… Show more

“…The double synchrotron interpretation was invoked for the infrared knots of the jet in the quasar 3C 273 (Uchiyama et al 2006). The multi-component interpretation was applied to the polarimetric properties observed with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) from kpc-scale structures associated with the hot spot of 3C 445 (Orienti et al 2017). Thus, the mid-infrared observations have gradually revealed that the acceleration phenomena in the hot spots are actually complicated and heterogeneous rather than the simple one-zone Fermi acceleration.…”

“…In addition, a denser short-baseline coverage enabled by ALMA is useful to search for 100pc scale substructures which were possibly missed in the VLBA observation by Tingay et al (2008). Finally, polarimetric information obtained with ALMA is expected to be very useful to constrain the magnetic field configu-ration and to infer the particle acceleration process (e.g., Orienti et al 2017). “…The turbulence (e.g., Asano et al 2014) and associated magnetic reconnection (e.g., Sironi & Spitkovsky 2014) are theoretically proposed to behave as an efficient accelerator. However, concrete signatures of these acceleration processes in the hot spots have not yet been confirmed, except for an observational suggestion by Orienti et al (2017).…”
