Abstract: The present study was conducted in the laboratory to investigate the allelopathic effect of Mexican poppy (Argemone mexicana L.) to the germination and growth parameters of two native species Brachiaria dictyoneura L and Clitoria ternatea L. Different concentrations of leaf and seed aqueous extracts from Argemone mexicana (0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%) were evaluated. Results showed that seed germination, root length, shoot length, seedling length, fresh weight and dry weight of B. dictyoneura and C. ternatea se… Show more

“…All treatments applied recorded low values in relation to the control (Table 1). This trend of negative effects of plant extract was previously reported by many authors (Haroun 2010, Haroun and Al Shehri 2001, Hassan et al 2013. All revealed that the tested plant extracts have inhibitory effects on mitotic division, especially at high concentrations.…”

“…To some extent this indicates the toxic effect level on Vicia faba at this concentration. A number of previous studies support this hypothesis (Siddiqui et al 2002, Laosinwattana et al 2009, Siddiqui 2007, Han et al 2008, Haroun and Al Shehri 2001, Hassan et al 2013, Teerarak et al 2010, Batish et al 2006.…”

“…According to [35] the permeability of allelochemicals to root is greater than to shoot. Obviously, the root length reduction is a better indicator of allelopathic effect than shoot growth [36].…”

“…The spread of A. ochroleuca has been ascribed to disturbance, overgrazing, and invasive competency [ 32 , 34 ]. The Mexican poppy has been reported to possess allelopathic activity which enables it to invade and dominate new habitats [ 33 , 35 ].…”
