Alien Species and Human Health: Austrian Stakeholder Perspective on Challenges and Solutions

Abstract: No saturation in the introduction, acceleration of spread and the increasing impacts of alien species are a characteristic feature of the Anthropocene. Concomitantly, alien species affecting human health are supposed to increase, mainly due to increasing global trade and climate change. In this study, we assess challenges and solutions posed by such species to the public health sector in Austria over the next few decades. We did so using an online questionnaire circulated to 131 experts and stakeholders workin… Show more

“…Indeed, suitable climatic conditions are spread throughout Europe in all time frames considered, even though with an evident prevalence of higher suitable classes of A. artemisiifolia intersecting (i.e., not potentially controlled by) the ones of O. communa . The control that this leaf beetle exerts over the invasive plant is of primary importance because of the problems that A. artemisiifolia causes to agriculture and human health [81,82,83].…”

“…Changes in temperature and precipitation can affect the distribution and growth rates of a variety of vegetation, including poisonous plants. Giant hogweed, a plant that was purposely imported as a unique ornamental, has become more invasive because of climate change and is spreading in parts of the United States and Europe ( Klimaszyk et al 2014 ; Schindler et al 2018 ). Giant hogweed sap contains furanocoumarins, causing skin hypersensitivity to UV light, and resulting in rashes and blistering ( Klimaszyk et al 2014 ; Downs et al 2019 ).…”
