Aim: To examine whether receipt of alcohol industry sponsorship is associated with problematic drinking in UK university students who play sport.Methods: University students (n=2450) participating in sports were invited to complete a pen-andpaper questionnaire by research staff approaching them at sporting facilities and in university settings. Respondents were asked whether they personally, their team, and/or their club were currently in receipt of sponsorship (e.g., money, free or subsidised travel, or sporting products), from an alcohol-related industry (e.g., bars, liquor stores, wholesalers), and whether they had solicited the sponsorship. Drinking was assessed using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT).Results: Questionnaires were completed by 2048 of those approached (response rate=83%).Alcohol industry sponsorship was reported by 36% of the sample. After accounting for confounders (age, gender, disposable income, and location) in multivariable models, receipt of alcohol sponsorship by a team (adjusted βadj=.41, p=.013), club (βadj=.73, p=.017), team and club (βadj=.79, p=0.002), and combinations of individual and team or club sponsorships (βadj=1.27, p<0.002), were each associated with significantly higher AUDIT-Consumption substance scores.Receipt of sponsorship by team and club (aOR=2.04; 95% CI: 1.04-3.99) and combinations of individual and team or club sponsorships (aOR=4.12; 95% CI: 1.29-13.15) were each associated with increased odds of being classified a hazardous drinker (AUDIT score >8). Respondents who sought out sponsorship were not at greater risk than respondents who had, or whose teams or clubs had, been approached by the alcohol industry.Conclusions: University students in the United Kingdom who play sport and who personally receive alcohol industry sponsorship or whose club or team receives alcohol industry sponsorship appear to have more problematic drinking behaviour than UK university students who play sport and receive no alcohol industry sponsorship. Policy to reduce or cease such sponsorship should be considered.

IZVLEČEKKljučne besede: študentje, pitje alkohola, presečne študije, verižno popivanje, tvegano pitje, škodljivo pitje, Slovenija Izhodišča. Tvegano in škodljivo pitje alkohola v Sloveniji predstavlja velik zdravstveni, socialni in ekonomski problem, tudi med mladimi. V Sloveniji obstajajo temeljite raziskave o pitju alkohola med osnovnošolci in srednješolci, medtem ko so podatki o pitju alkohola med študenti pomanjkljivi.Metode. Presečna študija. Študentje prvih letnikov rednega študija Univerze v Ljubljani, ki so prišli na obvezni redni preventivni zdravstveni pregled med oktobrom 2009 in majem 2010, so izpolnili neanonimni vprašalnik o življenjskem slogu. Ta je vseboval tudi standardizirani vprašalnik o pitju alkohola AUDIT-C ter vprašanji o kajenju in izkušnjah z drogo. Podatki so bili analizirani z multivariatnimi in večnivojskimi metodami.Rezultati. Vprašalnik je izpolnilo 7.221 študentov, 38,5 % moških in 61,5 % žensk. V zadnjem letu je alkohol pilo 87,3 % študentov. Tvegano ali škodljivo pije 23,1 % študentov. V zadnjem letu se je vsaj enkrat opilo 61,4 % študentov. Abstinentov je 11,8 %. Večji obet za tvegano in škodljivo pitje imajo študenti moškega spola, kadilci in študenti z izkušnjami z drogo. Večino variance v tveganem in škodljivem pitju alkohola pojasnimo z dejavniki na ravni študentov, razlike med fakultetami pa pojasnijo samo 2 % skupne variance.Sklepi. Študentje Univerze v Ljubljani alkohol pijejo prekomerno. Med kajenjem, izkušnjami z drogo in tveganim ali škodljivim pitjem je jasna povezava. Rezultati raziskave kažejo na potrebo po pripravi ustreznega preventivnega programa, s katerim bi zmanjšali porabo alkohola med študenti. ABSTRACT

A cross-sectional survey of university students in England in 2008???2009 was undertaken. A questionnaire battery, including the Drinking Expectancies Questionnaire (DEQ) and a measure of normative beliefs, was completed by 770 students from seven universities across England. Responses from 638 students who were not abstaining from alcohol were analyzed. Students engaged in university sport have significantly higher drinking expectancies of assertion compared with students not engaged in university sport. Moreover, students engaged in university sport consistently report higher personal alcohol consumption and higher perceptions of consumption in those around them than students not engaged in university sport. Both assertion and the perception that students around them drink heavily provide only a partial explanation for why students engaged in university sport drink more than those not engaged in university sport. Further research is required to identify the reasons for heavy drinking among students involved in university sport in England
