Abstract: BackgroundHuman papilloma virus (HPV) associated Head and Neck Cancers (HNCs) have generated significant amount of research interest in recent times. Due to high incidence of HNCs and lack of sufficient data on high-risk HPV (hr-HPV) infection from North -East region of India, this study was conceived to investigate hr-HPV infection, its types and its association with life style habits such as tobacco, alcohol consumption etc.MethodsA total of one hundred and six primary HNC tumor biopsy specimens were collect… Show more

“…Similarly, Kis 28 observed that 66% of the patients evaluated were EBV positive, the majority of which corresponded to large tumors, which was related to a decrease in patient survival. EBV-HPV co-infection was observed in half of the samples, which supports the hypothesis of Kumar et al, 5 which proposes that infection by multiple oncogenic viral agents acts as an important risk factor in oral carcinoma. Similarly, Jiang et al 29 suggest that co-infection may have a bigger effect on invasion than on proliferation.…”

“…HPV has been reported as an etiological agent in the carcinogenesis of HNC especially OPC more so in western literature [1][2][3]16]. These HPV-positive HNC have also been observed to have a different subset of clinicopathological characteristics and preferably good response to treatment modalities [26][27][28][29][30].…”

“…These HPV-positive HNC have also been observed to have a different subset of clinicopathological characteristics and preferably good response to treatment modalities [26][27][28][29][30]. A few Indian studies have also reported the incidence of HPV in various head and neck cancer across different parts of India [16][17][18][19][20]. In India, tobacco-related OCSCC still remains the most common neoplastic lesion causing grave morbidity [1].…”
