BackgroundAs early as before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, nearly one billion people worldwide suffered from mental health problems. Of all the mental health conditions, major depressive disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of global health-related burden. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many uncertain factors affecting mental health accumulated, such as virus transmission, blockade and ban, public transport restrictions, closure of schools and enterprises, and reduction of social interaction, which led to an increase in the potential risk of MDD, further increasing the global health-related burden. MethodologyTo better clarify the public interest in major depressive disorder during the COVID-19 pandemic, a Google Trends analysis was employed with data from December 2019 to December 2021, taking the cumulative diagnosis rate and cumulative mortality rate of COVID-19 as the reference standard, The changes in public interest and behavior in online searching for major depressive disorder in the three countries most affected by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus (i.e. the United States, Brazil, and India) were evaluated. ResultsWe observed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, public interest in major depressive disorder increased significantly on the Internet. At the same time, compared with the United States, this upward trend is more prominent in India and Brazil. The study found that the major depressive disorder search index of the United States reached the maximum at the end of September 2021, the major depressive disorder search index of Brazil reached the maximum at the beginning of July 2021, and the major depressive disorder search index of India reached the maximum at the beginning of June 2021. The above time nodes are the first turning point of decline after the continuous surge of COVID-19 confirmed cases in the United States, Brazil, and India, indicating that there is an important time correlation between the surge of COVID-19 cases and the public online search term major depressive disorder. ConclusionThe Google Trends analysis shows that public interest in major depressive disorder is on the rise under the COVID-19 pandemic and that COVID-19 may be associated with MDD. These findings deserve further exploration, especially as a growing body of research reports suggests that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the prevalence of MDD. The epidemic alerts the vast majority of countries to urgently strengthen mental health systems and provide patients with the necessary interventions based on the determinants of poor mental health.

BackgroundThe pandemic caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted the healthcare system worldwide, leading to the suspension of elective surgeries and a decline in the utilization of minimally invasive surgeries (MIS). However, an objective parameter depicting the degree of decline of MIS is lacking. We aim to indirectly evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of MIS performed by the surgeons by evaluating the public interest in MIS using Google Trends. MethodsA Google Trends search using the string ["laparoscopic" + "minimally invasive" + "robotic surgery"] was performed on June 2, 2021. The monthly relative search volume (RSV) indices were compared with the number of reported COVID-19 cases during the same period. ResultsRSV was highest between August 2018 and February 2020. RSV at the start of the pandemic was 95 but had declined to 51 during the first COVID-19 peak in April 2020 and 80 during the second peak in May 2021. ConclusionThe monthly RSV related to MIS on Google Trends is a good tool to indirectly estimate the degree of decline in the number of MIS (both laparoscopic and robotic) performed worldwide during the pandemic.

“…Regarding Baidu Index which is a popular tool to understand online interests (Long et al, 2022), the previous studies have been applied to multiple fields, including but not limited to inclusive education, knowledge management, mental health, disease prevention and control (Long et al, 2022;Tan et al, 2022a;Wang et al, 2020;He et al, 2022;Tan et al, 2022b). Objective: Current evidence shows the master of physical education has attracted attention since its opening. The study aims to quantify recent trends in the public interest and related online search behavior for master of physical education, and “nowcast” future scenarios with respect to the master of physical education. Methods: Baidu Index, a database of search engines with massive information, was employed. By searching for the keyword master of physical education, and using content analysis to understand the data information related to master of physical education. It extracted the search trend data regarding Chinese interest in the master of physical education from November 21, 2016, to November 21, 2022. Finally, it compares the search trend of search interests in the master of physical education with related terms. Results: It found that the search trend of master of physical education was on the rise overall. Specifically, the peak value appeared in September 2019, the valley value appeared around the Spring Festival each year, and the search trend in other periods was stable. Conclusion: The raise in public interest in a master of physical education will likely result in an increase in the number of candidates who are going to attend the National Graduate Entrance Exam to pursue a master of physical education. In the coming months or more, the competition for the employment of sports professionals in China will become more intense. Affected by the COVID-19, more people are interested in health and physical exercise, and then pay attention to the Master of Physical Education. The Sports Law of the People's Republic of China has been revised recently, which has led to more people interested in the master of physical education.
