Air‐Stable Solid‐State Photoluminescence Standards for Quantitative Measurements Based on 4′‐Phenyl‐2,2′ : 6′,2′′‐Terpyridine Complexes with Trivalent Lanthanides

Abstract: Correct photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) determination in the solid state is vital for numerous application fields, such as photovoltaics, solid lighting or the development of phosphors. In order to increase the limited number of suitable standards for such determinations, two new Ln3+‐based complexes with 4′‐phenyl‐2,2′ : 6′,2“‐terpyridine γ‐[Ln4(OAc)12(ptpy)2] (1‐Eu with europium and 1‐Tb with terbium) are presented. The corresponding complexes show solid‐state QYs of 58(4) % and 46(3) %, respectively,… Show more

“…An additional check using another standard material g-[Tb 4 (OAc) 12 (ptpy) 2 ] veried the calibration of the Quanta-4 Integrating Sphere (l ex = 310 nm, l em = 450-700 nm; F exp = 46(1)%, F lit = 46(3)% (ref. 63)). Ln 3+based QYs were determined with l ex = 310 nm and l em = 450-700 nm.…”

“…Typically, for Tb(III) complex with terpyridines, the QY is several times lower than that for the Eu(III) analogue due to the position of the ligand triplet state energy level. 64 And it was reported by Zeng et al that in the cocrystals Eu(NO 3 ) 5 •H 2 tppz and Tb(NO 3 ) 5 •H 2 tppz, the energy absorbed on tppz could transfer to Eu(III), but could not transfer to Tb(III). 65 As shown in Table 2, the same phenomenon was also observed in the mononuclear [Eu(hfac) 3 (ptpy)] and [Tb(hfac) 3 (ptpy)] complexes.…”
