Aiding the Self‐Assembly of Supramolecular Polyoxometalates under Hydrothermal Conditions To Give Precursors of Complex Functional Oxides

Abstract: In situ Raman spectroscopy allows insight into molecular processes under hydrothermal conditions during synthesis of complex nanostructured MoVTeNb oxides (see picture: Nb yellow, Mo blue, V/Mo pale blue, Te red). Based on the knowledge acquired, the synthesis can be more efficiently directed towards the desired product with improved functionality.

“…The {Mo 132 }‐type capsules can even be used for the synthesis of metal oxides, for example, Mo‐V‐Sb30 (Figure 2) and Mo‐V‐Te29a oxides, thereby also demonstrating the transferability of pentagonal {(Mo VI )Mo VI 5 }‐type units as well as their role in the controlled syntheses of complex multielement oxide phases, which are of great importance as catalysts for the selective oxidation of light alkanes 53a. It should be noted that the smaller Keplerates with mononuclear linkers43, 44a act similarly as they exhibit the same pentagonal units 53b. 54…”

“…Spectroscopic and analytical studies of inorganic syntheses are particularly important to understand the mechanisms behind the complex reactions under hydrothermal conditions and to rationally design experiments for the synthesis of new phases exhibiting designated properties 1d,2. We have developed an analytical autoclave (Figure 1) that enables the synthesis of comparatively large batches of oxides according to a new concept that implies a guided synthesis based on spectroscopic information obtained online during the entire experiment 3. The synthesis is performed automated according to a pre‐assigned sequence of reaction steps and the reaction parameters, such as temperature, pressure, power intake of the stirrer, and pH are measured and recorded.…”

“…In agreement with the XRD results, after the propene reaction the Raman spectrum kept the general features of M1 but lost distinct bands at $\tilde \nu $ =875 (MO stretching) and 450 cm −1 . These two Raman bands were identified as indicators of the high crystallinity of the M1 phase, as the bands occurred upon annealing nanocrystalline M1 into microcrystalline M1 at elevated temperatures 23. Besides, no sign of coke deposition24 at $\tilde \nu $ =1300–1800 cm −1 was observed in the Raman analysis.…”
