Aggregation control of Ru and Ir nanoparticles by tunable aryl alkyl imidazolium ionic liquids

Abstract: Small change–large effect: An added para-methyl group on the aryl ring in the 1-aryl-3-alkyl-imidazolium motif of TAAILs leads to well-separated metal nanoparticles.

“…53,54 The IL cations can have a profound effect on the stabilization, size and size distribution of the obtained metal nanoparticles. 55,57 Imidazolium-ILs, in particular with the cation [BMIm] + are well established for the synthesis of small NPs. 18,19,54,[56][57][58][59][60] However, [BMIm] + contains a slightly acidic proton in the C-2 position which can lead to metal-carbene formation.…”

“…One has to keep in mind that for determination of NP sizes different aspects regarding sampling and statistics may arise [22] . TEM analysis of NPs stabilized in ILs is by no means trivial; the IL is typically removed as much as possible (e. g. by suspending and /or washing steps using volatile, conventional organic solvents) in order to improve image quality and avoid image contamination in the electron beam [2c,23] . In our case, NPs were suspended in THF for preparation of TEM grids which is immiscible with [BMIm][BF 4 ].…”

“…By combining cations and anions in a wide variety of ways, or by selectively modifying organic groups of the ions, physical properties such as melting point, viscosity, high thermal stability, volatility and acidity can be influenced, which is why ILs are also called “designer solvents” . Due to these variable properties, ILs have been extensively investigated in recent years and have been used, for example, as solvents in organic and catalytic syntheses, as electrolyte liquids in batteries, as additives in dye cells, as extraction media for metals or for the synthesis of nanoparticles, and metal clusters . Furthermore, they are used in processes such as dissolving of cellulose or for the synthesis of alkoxyphenyl‐phosphines in the industrial BASIL™ process ,…”
