The Strandja Massif (Sakar-Strandja Zone) forms an important link between the Balkan Zone (external Balkanides) of Bulgaria, which is commonly correlated with the Variscan orogen in Central Europe, and the Western Pontides of Turkey. The Bulgarian part of the massif is composed of a metamorphic basement (various granite gneisses, paragneisses, and schists) traditionally interpreted as having Precambrian age, Triassic-Jurassic metasedimentary cover, and Upper Cretaceous volcanosedimentary sequences. The basement is intruded by large granitic plutons of Variscan age that are widespread mostly across Turkish territory. New LA-ICP-MS data support the suggestion of Variscan granitoid magmatism in the studied area but do not confirm the presence of Precambrian rocks. Furthermore, two stages of magmatism are determined in relation to the Variscan metamorphism and deformation. The first one (301.9 ± 1.1 Ma) is represented by strongly deformed metagranites and thus is interpreted as syntectonic, while the second one is relatively younger (293.5 ± 1.7 Ma) and postmetamorphic.

Several plutons located in the southwestern part of the Sredna Gora Zone -Bulgaria are examples of the Apuseni-Banat-Timok-Sredna Gora type of granites emplaced during Late Cretaceous (86-75 Ma) times. The studied intrusive bodies are spatially related to and deformed by the dextral Iskar-Yavoritsa shear zone. The deformation along the shear zone ceased at the time of emplacement of the undeformed Upper Cretaceous Gutsal pluton, which has intruded the Iskar-Yavoritsa mylonites. A clear transition from magmatic foliation to high-, moderate-and low-temperature superimposed foliation and lineation in the vicinity of the Iskar-Yavoritsa and related shear zones gives evidence for simultaneous tectonics and plutonism. Away from the shear zones, the granitoids appear macroscopically isotropic and were investigated using measurements of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility at 113 stations. The studied samples show magnetic lineation and foliation, in agreement with the magmatic structures observed at a few sites. Typical features of the internal structure of the plutons are several sheet-like mafic bodies accompanied by swarms of mafic microgranular enclaves. Field observations indicate spatial relationships between mafic bodies and shear zones as well as mingling processes in the magma chamber which suggest simultaneous shearing and magma emplacement. Structural investigations as well as anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data attest to the controlling role of the NW-SE trending Iskar-Yavoritsa shear zone and to the syntectonic emplacement of the plutons with deformation in both igneous rocks and their hosts. The tectonic situation may be explained by partitioning of oblique plate convergence into plate-boundary-normal thrusting in the Rhodopes and plate-boundary-parallel transcurrent shearing in the hinterland (Sredna Gora).

Two contrasting Variscan units are juxtaposed in the area of Central Stara Planina Mountain. They are represented by two metamorphic complexes: a high-grade (Central Srednogorie high-grade metamorphic complex -CSHGMC) and low-grade (Stara Planina low-grade metamorphic complex -SPLGMC). Unlike the area to the west (Zlatitsa Stara Planina Mountain), the contact between them is severely overprinted by Palaeocene-Eocene thickskinned thrusting and Miocene-Quaternary extension. The suturing/docking of the two units is well constrained as Visean (∼ 330 Ma) and after a gap of about 15-20 Ma voluminous batches of granite magma were emplaced into the SPLGMC. These granites (Karlovo-Ribaritsa suite) are almost everywhere intensively foliated and they delineate a Late Variscan strike-slip dominated tectonic belt. As a contrast, another widespread granitoid suite (Kalofer granitoids) does not display gneissic fabric and can be regarded as a part of the batholithic-scale, composite Hisarya-Pastrovo pluton (303 ± 3 Ma). Our study documented contacts of the Kalofer granitoid suite, the type of the internal fabric and the presence of inclusions. The perfectly outcropped Palaeogene Botev Vrah allochthon is built by a sill-like body of Kalofer granitoids, emplaced conformably into SPLGMC. These granitoids are foliated along their margins as well as in shear zones. Despite this solid-state overprint, numerous meso-scale features indicate intrusive relations. On the other hand, it is well known that Kalofer granitoids are intrusive into CSHGMC gneisses and they also containThe work on this paper was initiated during the realization of PhD project (Eleonora Balkanska) funded by grant VU-13/06 from the Bulgarian National Science Fund (NSF). Additional support was provided by another NSF grant (DMU-03/41). 709km-scale stopped blocks/rafts from them. These relations undoubtedly indicate that the composite Hisarya-Pastrovo pluton is stitching one of the most important Variscan contacts in the central part of the Balkan peninsula.
