Abstract: The determination of age is an important step in defining the life history traits of individuals and populations. Age determination of odontocetes is mainly based on counting annual growth layer groups in the teeth. However, this useful method is always invasive, requiring the cutting of at least one tooth, and sometimes the results are difficult to interpret. Based on the concept that bone matrix is constantly deposited throughout life, we analysed the bone mineral density of the arm and forearm of a series o… Show more

“…Age estimates of cetaceans stand is a good tool to characterize populations and to understand the biology of individuals (Pinedo and Hohn, 2000;Butti et al, 2007;Azevedo et al, 2015;Carvalho et al, 2015). In this sense, the ability to estimate the age of small cetaceans is extremely important in natural history studies (Hohn et al, 1989).…”

“…Till now, the only studies addressing cetaceans in which this technique has been used concerned the flippers of S. coeruleoalba (Guglielmini et al, 2002) and of T. truncatus (Butti et al, 2007), and the rostrum of M. densirostris (Zotti et al, 2009). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic application of DXA to the comparative study of BMD of the rostrum of toothed whales.…”

“…Significant correlation between body length, age from GLG counts in teeth, and BMD in flippers was found in 15 striped dolphins (Guglielmini et al 2002) using multiple regression analysis and in bottlenose dolphins (Butti et al 2007) using a linear model. Guglielmini et al (2002) suggested that the model could predict the age of an individual if both length and BMD were known and there is a tight correlation between age and length, while Butti et al (2007) concluded that BMD values are reliable indicators of age when using a predictive model based on body length only.…”

However, Azevdeo et al (2015) found that in the Guiana dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) BMD is only reliable up to the age when the peak in bone density is reached.…”
