African American Children's Reports of Depressed Mood, Hopelessness, and Suicidal Ideation and Later Suicide Attempts

Abstract: This study attempted to assess whether family demographic characteristics and child aggressive behavior are equal to or better than child self-reported depressive symptoms in predicting suicidal behavior. Participants were a community population of African Americans first recruited at age 6 and followed periodically through age 19-20. Measures included child self-reports of depressed mood, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation, teacher reported child aggression in grades 4-6, 6 th grade caregiver report of famil… Show more

“…CV exposure was associated with later depressive symptoms which, in turn, were associated with suicidal ideation; however, this indirect association was due in part to stability in depressive symptoms. For males, there was a significant indirect effect of CV exposure on suicide attempt two years later; specifically, CV exposure was associated with increased aggressive behavior, which in turn was associated with males' report of suicide attempts. The observed associations between CV exposure and concurrent suicide ideation and attempt are consistent with prior cross-sectional research documenting increased suicidal behavior for youth exposed to CV [14,15,16]. That the association between CV exposure and suicide attempt was stronger for females than males was counter to expectation because males typically have more frequent exposure to CV and experience more severe CV events than females [7].…”

“…Examination of risk factors for suicide ideation and attempt suggest possible mechanisms that might link CV and suicide. For example, depressive symptoms have consistently been linked with suicide behaviors [14,15]. Aggressive youth also have been shown to have higher risk for suicide [16,17].…”

“…However, this is no longer possible, as accumulating evidence supports the existence of suicidal thoughts and actions in preadolescent children (Kloos et al, 2007). Although there are few deaths from suicide before adolescence, suicidal ideation was associated with a 1.5 times greater likelihood of making a suicide attempt by age 19 in a large urban cohort (Ialongo et al, 2004).…”
