AFLP variation in wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum C. Koch) with reference to salt tolerance and associated ecogeography

Abstract: Thirty-nine genotypes of Hordeum spontaneum were selected from three geographically separated areas (southwestern, northern, and southeastern) of the Fertile Crescent. The lines were subject to AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) analysis from which a similarity matrix was produced. A dendrogram of the data showed, with two exceptions, that the genotypes grouped together according to area of origin. This was confirmed by principal coordinate analysis in which the first principal coordinate separated … Show more

“…Plant ^^^C is a trait which has been used as an index of stress response (Farquhar & Richards, 1984), and we have demonstrated a good correlation (r = 0-71, P < 0-01) between shoot <^^^C and shoot Na"^ in salt-stressed barley (Pakniyat et al, 1991 a). Of the 204 polymorphic AFLPs, 12 were found to be significantly associated with shoot Na"^ and ^^^C (P < 0-05).…”

“…Linear regression has been applied elsewhere to identify markers for prediction of response variables (traits). Twelve AFLP DNA markers were associated with shoot Na + , ␦ 13 C and siteof-origin of ecogeographic data measured on 39 genotypes of wild barley (Hordeum spontaneum) (PAKNIYAT et al, 1997).…”
