Aerial Intelligent Reflecting Surface Enabled Terahertz Covert Communications in Beyond-5G Internet of Things

Milad Tatar Mamaghani,
Yi Hong

Abstract: the scheduled UE (Bob) per time slot via a UAV-mounted intelligent reflecting surface (UIRS) due to no direct path inbetween, while other unscheduled UEs (Willies) may not be trustworthy. We devise a novel covert communication protocol to guarantee secure data transmission, and our detailed contributions are summarized below.

“…a) G2G communications: In this context, the works in [41], [42], and [85]- [87] investigated a novel downlink framework using ARIS to assist high-frequency communications between GBS and GUs. By leveraging the mobility of ARIS and adjusting its position, the direct NLoS links between GBS and users can be replaced by two connected LOS links.…”

“…a) Existence of jammer: The work in [85] considered the communication between a GBS-GU pair to serve multiple GUs, where at most one user is scheduled at a given slot, while the other GUs act as potential eavesdroppers. Contrary to previous works focusing on securing the transmissions, we were interested in ensuring covert communications whose goal is to ensure the transmissions to be undetectable at the eavesdroppers.…”

“…In [19], the authors investigated AIRS to support ultra-reliable low latency (URLLC) communication to tackle the interference caused by the dense network. An AIRS communication system over Terahertz (THz) bands for confidential data dissemination from an access point (AP) towards multiple ground user equipments (UEs) on the internet-of-things (IoT) networks was investigated in [20]. In order to analyze the performance of AIRS under high-altitude, a wireless architecture mounted on a high-altitude aerial platform enabled by AIRS was investigated in [21].…”

“…They have also presented an analytical criterion for determining the most energy-efficient height and mode. In [12], the authors propose a THz-band IRS communication system mounted on a UAV for distributing data from an access point to multiple ground users in IoT networks. They formulate an optimization problem in terms of the minimum average energy efficiency to improve communication while minimizing network power usage.…”
