Embryo-fetal exposure to maternal disorders during intrauterine life programs long-term consequences for the health and illness of offspring. In this study, we evaluated whether mild diabetic rats that were given high-fat/high-sugar (HF/HS) diet presented maternal and fetal changes at term pregnancy. Female rats received citrate buffer (non-diabetic-ND) or streptozotocin (diabetic-D) after birth. According to the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), the experimental groups (n = 11 animals/group) were composed of non-diabetic and diabetic receiving standard diet (S) or HF/HS diet. High-fat/high-sugar diet (30% kcal of lard) in chow and water containing 5% sucrose and given 1 month before mating and during pregnancy. During and at the end of pregnancy, obesity and diabetes features were determined. After laparotomy, blood samples, periovarian fat, and uterine content were collected. The diabetic rats presented a higher glycemia and percentage of embryonic losses when compared with the NDS group. Rats DHF/HS presented increased obesogenic index, caloric intake, and periovarian fat weight and reduced gravid uterus weight in relation to the other groups. Besides, this association might lead to the inflammatory process, confirmed by leukocytosis. Obese rats (NDHF/HS and DHF/HS) showed higher triglyceride levels and their offspring with lower fetal weight and ossification sites, indicating intrauterine growth restriction. This finding may contribute to vascular alterations related to long-term hypertensive disorders in adult offspring. The fetuses from diabetic dams showed higher percentages of skeletal abnormalities, and DHF/HS dams still had a higher rate of anomalous fetuses. Thus, maternal diabetes and/or obesity induces maternal metabolic disorders that contribute to affect fetal development and growth.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo contribuir na compilação de artigos científicos sobre as plantas medicinais que possuem efeitos embriotóxicos e teratogênicos comprovados através de testes experimentais in vivo e in vitro. Foi realizado um levantamento nas bases de dados Medline, Pubmed, Web of Science, Cochrane, Biblioteca virtual em saúde, Lilacs e Scielo com os descritores, “Medicinal plants, embryotoxicity”; “Medicinal plants, Teratogenic effects”; “Medicinal plants, teratogenicity” e seus correspondentes em português: “Plantas medicinais, embriotoxicidade”; “Plantas medicinais, efeitos Teratogênicos”; “Plantas Medicinais Teratogenicidade”. Oito artigos de ensaios in vivo e quatro de in vitro e um que apresenta os dois ensaios, preencheram os critérios de inclusão e exclusão e foram selecionados para esta revisão. Destes, cinco foram realizados na América, um na Europa, três na África e dois na Ásia. Na maioria dos estudos in vivo o extrato da planta foi injetado no animal, observando assim seus efeitos. A partir deste estudo, foi verificado que as plantas podem apresentar algum tipo de efeito no processo embrionário, portanto, o consumo durante o estado gravidico deve ser avaliado por um profissional da área. Croton urucurana Baillon, popularly known as "sangria d'água", belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. The species has a great importance in folk medicine as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antiviral, antidiarrheal, intestinal antisecretory and cicatrizant remedies. The objective of this study was to verify the presence, in the aqueous, ethanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts, of secondary metabolites (alkaloids, anthraquinones, steroids/triterpenoids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins and tannins), analyze the inhibition of bacteria Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Salmonella thyphimurium ATCC 14028 growth, and evaluate the antioxidant activity by the DPPH method. Considering the phytochemical profile, the best extract was the aqueous; the bacteria susceptibility was inhibited with the ethanolic extract; and the extract with the highest antioxidant activity was the hydroalcoholic, presenting IC 50 1.3 μg/ mL. It was concluded that the extracts of Croton urucurana Baillon show interesting results and that further investigations must be carried out for the better elucidation of its benefits. RESUMOCroton urucurana Baillon, espécie conhecida popularmente como "sangria d'água", pertence à família Euphorbiaceae, possui grande importância na medicina popular, a qual lhe atribui propriedades antibacterianas, anti-inflamató-rias, antissépticas, antivirais, antidiarreicas, antissecretória intestinal e cicatrizante. Os objetivos deste estudo foram verificar a presença, nos extratos aquoso, etanólico e hidroalcoólico, de metabolitos secundários (alcaloides, antraquinonas, esteroides/triterpenoides, flavonoides, glicosídeos, saponinas e taninos), analisar a inibição do crescimento das bactérias Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 e Salmonella thyphimurium ATCC 14028, e verificar a atividade antioxidante através do método DPPH. Para o perfil fitoquímico o melhor extrato foi o aquoso, quanto à susceptibilidade bacteriana, houve inibição com o extrato etanólico e o extrato com a maior atividade antioxidante foi o hidroalcóolico, apresentando IC 50 1,3 μg/mL. Considerando os resultados obtidos no estudo, foi possível concluir que os extratos da Croton urucurana Baillon apresentam resultados interessantes e que mais investigações devem ser realizadas para a elucidação aprimorada dos seus benefícios.

Abstract: Croton urucurana treatment caused maternal toxicity, which contributed for impairment embryo fetal development. These results showed that the indiscriminate use of plants during pregnancy should be avoided to prevent potential risk on maternal health as well as their offspring.
