Adventitial Remodeling After Coronary Arterial Injury

Abstract: This study demonstrates the involvement of the adventitia in the vascular repair process after medial injury. The hypercellularity of the adventitial layer, proliferation of fibroblasts, and modulation of their phenotype to myofibroblasts are associated with the development of the thickened adventitia. It is postulated that these phenomena affect vascular remodeling and may provide an important insight into the mechanisms of vascular disorders.

“…In contrast, the adventitia underlying PTCA-induced lesions showed clear inflammatory and fibrotic changes with a progressive accumulation of collagen, whereas the neointima was strongly positive for Alcian blue staining, as previously described. 13 At 30 days, the adventitia of PTCA-treated arteries was always thicker than that of noninjured or stented arteries (Figure 2b). …”

“…The adventitia is a site for this autonomic innervations, 43) and it can affect the process of endoluminal atherosclerotic progression via several mechanisms. [44][45][46] Consequently, insuffi cient adaptation of the adventitia may increase the risk of end-organ dysfunctions, including infl ammation and thrombosis.…”

“…36,37 The adventitial also may influence atherosclerosis and vascular hypertrophy secondary to hypertension. 38 Because of the advantages that adventitial gene transfer avoids interruption of blood flow and disruption of the endothelium, as a target for site-specific vascular wall therapy, adventitial-specific gene transfer through the delivery of adenoviral vectors into the peri-arterial sheath has been demonstrated in different animal models.…”
