Advancing the Open Modeling Interface (OpenMI) for integrated water resources modeling

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe use of existing component-based modeling frameworks for integrated water resources modeling is currently hampered for some important use cases because they lack support for commonly used, topology-aware, spatiotemporal data structures. Additionally, existing frameworks are often accompanied by large software stacks with steep learning curves. Others lack specifications for deploying them on high performance, heterogeneous computing (HPC) infrastructure. This puts their use beyond the reach o… Show more

“… Ayllón et al, 2018 ). The Open Modeling Interface (OpenMI, Moore and Tindall, 2005 ), for example, has had to evolve from its initial focus in the hydrological sciences to accommodate an interdisciplinary modeling process ( Buahin and Horsburgh, 2018 ). Thus, while the processes and requirements of such frameworks may be generally applicable, there remains some difficulty in their generic implementation and adoption within the interdisciplinary context of SoS modeling.…”

“…HydroCouple is a software tool that applies these standards to hydrologic models. A core part of this tool is a graphical user interface that depicts connections between model components (Buahin & Horsburgh, 2018). These model description tools do not necessarily provide a deep descriptions of component models, and are text or flowchart-based rather than intuitively visual but they are a step in the right direction and could be expanded upon to provide visual representations.…”

“…Regarding interfaces for SWMM, an OpenMI interface was developed for SWMM that allows information to be exchanged with other OpenMI‐compliant models during runtime (Shrestha et al 2012; Buahin and Horsburgh 2018). However, few OpenMI‐compliant GI models are available.…”
