Adsorption of Cu (II) and Cd (II) onto Activated Carbon Prepared from Pumpkin Seed Shell

Abstract: Present study discusses the removal of heavy metal contaminants from an aqueous solution using orthophosphoric acid activated pumpkin seed shells derived activated carbon (PSS-AC). The activation was done by heating the mixture in an electrical furnace at 800 °C for 3 h. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of pH, contact time, initial Cu (II) and Cd (II) ion concentrations, adsorbent dosage and temperature of the solution for the metal ion removal. The equilibrium and kinetic studies data wer… Show more

“…Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are flattened and vary in size, shape and color. Oil extracted from pumpkin seeds has various benefits such as anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-viral properties [22]. The pumpkin seed shell survey shows that many researchers are focusing on the preparation and usage of pumpkin seed shell as a possible absorbent for contaminant removal [23][24][25][26].…”

“…It is evident from Figure 5a that the distribution curve of PAC particles could be counted a uniform-distribution curve. The percentage of adsorption is higher for those adsorbents have smaller particle size due to the availability of more surface area [48]. The surface morphology of PAC was visualized via FESEM, with a magnification of 10,000×, as shown in Figure 5b.…”

“…Many elements are classified into the category of heavy metals, but some are relevant in the environmental context. List of the environmentally relevant most toxic heavy metals and metalloids contains Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg, and As" Kemal et al [1]. "Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements that have a high atomic weight and a density at least 5 times greater than that of water.…”

“…Their multiple industrial, domestic, agricultural, medical and technological applications have led to their wide distribution in the environment; raising concerns over their potential effects on human health and the environment. Their toxicity depends on several factors including the dose, route of exposure, and chemical species, as well as the age, gender, genetics, and nutritional status of exposed individuals" [1].…”
