A composite based on hydroxyapatite (HA) and chitosan (CS) combined with ciprofloxacin (CIP) was formulated by the solid–liquid mixing method. The optimization of the solid to the liquid ratio and the use of chitosan in a small amount (≤5 wt%) promoted the preparation of stable and rigid monoliths. A synergistic effect of CS and CIP contents on the compressive strength of the CIP‐loaded composite was evidenced. The compressive strength of the fabricated biocomposite ranged in values from 1 to 6 MPa, comparable to those reported for cancellous bone. The improvement of the mechanical properties with the increase of the rate of organic components was correlated with the diminution of the surface area and the reduction in the pore volume of the specimens. On the other hand, the in vitro release experiments of the antibiotic indicated a sustained and controlled release of CIP over 10 days. Moreover, in vitro antibacterial tests performed on the biocomposite HA‐CS5‐CIP showed significant inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli pathogens. According to the showed results, the formulated composite with three‐phase components could be a promising material for bone repair and local antibiotic release for the treatment of bone infections.

Biocompatible bone implants are often proposed to improve osseointegration such as metal or polymer. Calcium hydroxyapatite Ca10(PO4)6-OH2, HA is the primary inorganic component of human bone. Hydroxyapatite and polymer are biocompatible to the human body and help to increase bone growth. Increasing osseointegration by application of coating polymer on ceramic using the dip coating method is a challenge in itself for the success of the process of coating polymeric materials on ceramic materials using the previous method. This research aims to establish a new interface for promoting osseointegration. This interface between the polymeric part and the bone tissue to overcome the problems and failures that occur in the metal limbs implanted in the amputees. As a result of its rejection by the cells of the living body or the lack of good cohesion between the implant and the place of contact. In this work, coat PEEK plastic material coated with an active biocompatible material (Hydroxyapatite). The polymeric parts that implant inside the bone will be used as an anchor for the metallic screw that is used for bone succession or artificial limb. This research is one of a series of investigations that enhance bone osseointegration in the simplest and most efficient method. The dipping method is used to create adhesive between ceramic and polymer (polyether ether ketone) depending on the chitosan material. Tape tests showed that there was good adherence between the HA and PEEK surfaces.

Degradable membranes were obtained by blending of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with poly lactic acid (PLA) as biodegradable polymer. The effect of the amount of PLA from 10 to 30 wt% on the PVC membrane properties was investigated. The PVC/PLA(80/20) membrane exhibited higher porosity, water uptake and pure water flux than other fabricated membranes. The PVC/PLA(80/20) membrane in TGA results showed that lower temperature required to decompose the membrane in compare of neat PVC membrane. The effect of the amount of hydroxyapatite (HAp) from 0.0 to 3.0 wt% on the PVC/PLA(80/20) membrane structural and antifouling properties was investigated. With the increase in the amount of the HAp up to 2.5 wt%, membrane porosity, hydrophilicity and pure water flux increased. PVC/PLA(80/20)‐2.5 membrane showed higher surface roughness in compare of neat PVC and PVC/PLA(80/20) blended membrane, resulting in higher antifouling properties. Also in the SEM images, embedding the HAp causes to suppress the macrovoids in the cross section of membrane with a higher number of surface pores, which also had lower pore diameter.The humic acid rejection ratios of all PVC/PLA‐HAp nanocomposite membranes were higher than 87%; and all the nanocomposite membranes exhibited higher reversible fouling ratios (RFRs) than the neat PVC membrane.
