Adolescent Sleepiness: Causes and Consequences

Abstract: Insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality are common among adolescents. The multidimensional causes of insufficient sleep duration and poor sleep quality include biological, health-related, environmental, and lifestyle factors. The most common direct consequence of insufficient and/or poor sleep quality is excessive daytime sleepiness, which may contribute to poor academic performance, behavioral health problems, substance use, and drowsy driving. Evaluation of sleepiness includes a detailed sleep his… Show more

“…Whilst self-report assessment has been established as a valid means for assessing these behaviours and may lead to more honest reporting than face-to-face assessment (67) , the possibility of individual over-or under-reporting cannot be discounted. Not all confounding variables relating to sleep were able to be adjusted for in modelling, for example, medication use which might interfere with sleep was not able to be controlled for, nor was night-time screen use, which has been associated with sleep disturbances and insufficient sleep duration (2,68) . This issue may be particularly relevant to this age group given 75 % of young adults (18-24 years) in the 2016 Australian Sleep Health Survey reported using the internet just prior to their bedtime on most nights (1) .…”

“…Sleep is a fundamental biological requirement vital for physical and mental health. Inadequate or reduced sleep quality has wide-ranging negative effects on health and everyday living (1,2) . For example, sleeping <6-7 h/d has been associated with increased risk of obesity (3) , diabetes (4) , hypertension (5) and heart disease (1,6) .…”

“…Disregarding physiological signals of sleepiness is widespread, which has been linked to multiple adverse outcomes in young populations, including an increased likelihood of road traffic accidents, substance use, as well as behavioural and health conditions [ 31 ]. Conversely, selective attention to physiological signals such as increased heart rate, as a consequence of hyper-interoceptive awareness, may contribute to the onset or exacerbation of conditions, such as anxiety and insomnia [ 32 ].…”

“…Sleeping adequately can provide many benefits for health 3 , 4 , and the lack of it causes drowsiness, daytime sleepiness, and may even impair emotional regulation and cognitive performance 5 . The negative effects of sleep deprivation may predispose children and adolescents who sleep less to opt for sedentary activities instead of physical activity, even if they have more waking time to engage in physical activities.…”
