Adipose tissue production of hepatocyte growth factor contributes to elevated serum HGF in obesity

Abstract: Serum HGF is elevated in obese individuals. This study examined the contribution of excess adipose tissue to increased circulating HGF levels in obesity. Serum HGF was measured by ELISA before and after weight loss due to bariatric surgery or a 24-h fast. At 6.1 ± 0.1 mo following surgery, BMI (50.6 ± 1.6 vs. 35.1 ± 1.3 kg/m2; P < 0.0001) and serum HGF were significantly decreased (1,164 ± 116 vs. 529 ± 39 pg/ml, P < 0.001). A 24-h fast did not change serum HGF, but serum leptin was significantly reduced… Show more

“…32,33 Furthermore, high levels of HGF expression were found in white adipose tissue. 4,34 There are no data, however, concerning the contribution of a specific adipose tissue depot in the production of HGF. The current results indicate that specifically VAT, may have a contribution to HGF concentrations.…”

“…Leptin can stimulate the critical steps required to evoke an angiogenic program (69). In addition, bFGF can promote vascular endothelial cell growth (70) and hence the process of angiogenesis. Of note, bFGF is secreted by preadipocytes, and its levels are increased during caloric excess.…”

“…Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) and fibroblast growth factor-10 (FGF-10) are also potent inducers of angiogenesis secreted by adipocytes [13,14,26]. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is also secreted by adipocytes and stimulates angiogenesis [3,39]. Leptin is a major adipocytokine which plays a crucial role in the regulation of appetite and energy metabolism [6,16,33].…”
