Addressing the Challenges in Federating Edge Resources

Abstract: Throughout this chapter, we use the general term "Edge" to refer to a collection of technologies that aim towards decentralizing data center resources for bringing computational resources closer to the end user. Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), Cloudlets, Fog computing, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) can all be considered as instances of Edge computing [9]. Therefore, generally speaking, the principles discussed in this chapter can be broadly applied to the aforementioned technologies. The remainder of this cha… Show more

“…The orchestration of resources and network traffic across geo-distributed nodes are provided using specialised interfaces such as OpenStack and Open-Flow enabling software-defined network (SDN) controller to manage distributed nodes effectively. The evolution of SDN allows for a logically centralized but physically distributed control plane by eliminating vendor dependency and compatibility issues between different networking devices [84].…”

“…In [12] Cihat Baktir et.al created Software Defined Networking (SDN) as an answer for tending to the systems administration challenges as it normally fits taking care of them [5]. The key idea of SDN is to isolate the control plane from the information plane and focus the center rationale on a product based controller.…”
