Additive Manufacturing: Reproducibility of Metallic Parts

Abstract: Abstract:The present study deals with the properties of five different metals/alloys (Al-12Si, Cu-10Sn and 316L-face centered cubic structure, CoCrMo and commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti)-hexagonal closed packed structure) fabricated by selective laser melting. The room temperature tensile properties of Al-12Si samples show good consistency in results within the experimental errors. Similar reproducible results were observed for sliding wear and corrosion experiments. The other metal/alloy systems also show repeata… Show more

“…In conclusion, while the ability to manufacture SLM samples with reproducible properties (e.g. tensile strength), keeping the same process parameters and powder quality, has been proven [46], we point out new important aspects that need full consideration while producing components or test specimens in series. Factors such as the position inside the build chamber or the homogeneity of gas flow need to be investigated in a more systematic manner, and possibly other parameters in the build job need also to be taken into account.…”

“…The tensile tests were carried out in the as-prepared condition without any external heat treatment. The samples were all built in one and the same build spread across the substrate plate [20][21][22].…”

“…Conventional manufacturing involves molding, machining, joining, forming and finishing of a bulk material resulting in a high material input, huge material wastage and excessive labour cost . Alternatively, AM is a rapid prototyping technology where 3D components are built by adding layer‐upon‐layer of material with sequential melting, on the basis of a computer‐generated model . AM has already made a profound impact in the aerospace, medical and automobile industries, rapidly foraying into electronics, energy, aesthetics, sports and construction sectors .…”
