Adaptive Optiken – Möglichkeiten für die Diagnostik hereditärer Netzhauterkrankungen

Abstract: The use of adaptive optics in ophthalmoscopy is a breakthrough technological achievement. With AO ophthalmoscopes, the microscopic retinal structure can be visualised non-invasively and on a cellular level, allowing for cellular scale imaging of the retinal nerve fibre layer, the smallest retinal capillaries, rod and cone photoreceptors, and the retinal pigment epithelium mosaic in the living subject. Regarding the diagnostic evaluation of retinal diseases, the current research focuses on monogenetic retinal d… Show more

“… 58 Still, future studies on innovative technics such as swept-source OCT devices or adaptive optics are of interest and merit further investigations. 59 , 60 Small study cohorts are common as ABCA4 -related retinopathy ranks among the rare retinal diseases. Nevertheless, this is the overall largest study to provide a systematic investigation of the interreader and intermodality agreement for semiautomated grading of RPE atrophy using GAF and BAF imaging to date.…”

“…Commercial adaptive optics (AO) imaging devices allow for resolving the cone mosaic in healthy eyes (Domdei et al., 2017; Reiniger et al., 2017). In eyes with AMD, drusen and the altered outer retinal structure can impair the resolution.…”

“…With AO imaging, it is apparent that many retinal diseases exhibit structural changes of the photoreceptor mosaic involving cell loss or disruption, often only discernible at the microscopic level. That cell-resolved imaging may be a tool for early detection of latent disease onset holds considerable promise for vision health, and future therapeutic approaches may be identified efficiently with photoreceptor based imaging biomarkers [93,94].…”
