Adaptive broadcast for travel and traffic information distribution based on inter-vehicle communication

Abstract: Conventional Traffic and Travel Information (=I) systems are based on a centralized structure: Sensors deployed at the roadside nwnitor the traffic and transmit the results to a central unit, which performs a situation analysis. P I is made available to the drivers via bmadcast service (e.g. TMC/RDS) or on demand via cellularphone. In contrast to this centralized approach, a decentralized, Self-organizing Trafic Information System (SOTIS) based on Inter-Vehicle Communication ( W C ) has many advantages: It req… Show more

“…Based on VANETs, recent research [4][5][6][7]18] has introduced zero-infrastructure systems where information is exchanged only between the vehicles themselves. Data delivery between vehicles can be classified into two models: push and pull [12].…”

“…However its periodic reports will likely suffer from packet collisions under high traffic density conditions or from missed communication opportunities during high (relative) velocity situations. Wischhof et al presented a "provoked" broadcast scheme for travel and traffic information distribution based on IVC in [10,11]. The provoked broadcast scheme can adapt the inter-transmission interval based on the local environment and based on knowledge gained from the received packets.…”

“…Rather than depending entirely on a centralized traffic information system which has limited coverage and can suffer from potential single-point failures, several researchers have begun to investigate decentralized traffic information systems [8,9,10,11]. These decentralized traffic systems are based on IVC and are fully decentralized.…”
