Acute Ischemic Stroke

Abstract: Acute ischemic stroke is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States and worldwide. Despite the development of specialized stroke centers, mortality and morbidity as a result of acute ischemic strokes can and do happen anywhere. These strokes are emergency situations requiring immediate intervention. This article covers the fundamentals of care involved in treating patients with acute ischemic stroke, including essentials for the initial evaluation, basic neuroimaging, reperfusion therapies, … Show more

“…AIS, which is the most prevalent cerebrovascular disease, has a morbidity and mortality rate of approximately 3-5% and a disability rate of 34-37% (1,18). Early diagnosis and treatment would effectively reduce the death and disability rates associated with this disease and significantly improve the quality of life of patients (19).…”

“…Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) accounts for 70% of all stroke cases and is associated with markedly high patient disability and mortality rates (1). Early diagnosis and timely intervention would significantly reduce these rates and improve the prognostic outcomes and quality of life of patients with AIS (2,3).…”

“…Stroke was defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the 1970s as “rapidly developing clinical signs of focal disturbance of cerebral function, lasting more than 24 hours or leading to death with no apparent cause other than that of vascular origin” [ 4 ]. Around 87% of stroke cases are ischemic stroke, which is triggered by a lack of blood supply to focal brain areas, leading to subsequent damage and neurodegeneration [ 5 7 ]. Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide [ 7 , 8 ].…”

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death worldwide [ 7 , 8 ]. Thrombolytic medication, such as alteplase (t-PA), is the only FDA-approved therapeutic agent for treating acute ischemic stroke within a few hours after its onset [ 9 ].…”

“… 1 Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is the common type of stroke induced by blood occlusion. 2 The treatments of stroke were constituted by emergency reperfusion of blood flow and other precautionary methods. 3 , 4 However, recent achievement underlines that the reperfusion after acute ischemia of the brain might lead to even severe injury.…”
