Activated carbons prepared from mixtures of coal tar pitch and petroleum pitch and their electrochemical performance as electrode materials for electric double-layer capacitor

Abstract: Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared by activation of coal tar pitch (CTP) in the range of 700°C-1000°C for 1-4 h using potassium hydroxide (KOH) powder as the activation agent. The optimal activation conditions were determined to be a CTP/KOH ratio of 1:4, activation temperature of 900°C, and activation time of 3 h. The obtained ACs showed increased pore size distribution in the range of 1 to 2 nm and the highest specific capacitance of 122 F/g in a two-electrode system with an organic electrolyte, as measur… Show more

“…As shown in the Nyquist plot of Figure e, the initial point of a semicircle determines the solution resistance ( R s ), which depends on the electrolyte conductivity and separator. In addition, the final point of the semicircle determines the internal contact resistance ( R c ), which is composed of electronic resistance (including the intrinsic electronic conductivity of particles) and ionic resistance (depending on the electrolyte conductivity and pore texture) . The R s and R c values of H-ST-EH-AC, H-MT-EH-AC, H-OT-EH-AC, and commercial activated carbon are 0.67, 0.97, 1.01, and 0.68 Ω and 2.89, 4.86, 8.58, and 20.1 Ω, respectively.…”

“…There is ah uge increase in the C/H molar ratio, as shown in Figure S1 b( in the Supporting Information), implying that the molecular aromaticity increases and the condensation degree deepens. [15,28,29] The change of characteristic peaks for aliphatic (2920/1440 cm À1 )a nd aromatic (3045/700-900 cm À1 ) [30,31] hydrocarbons in the infrared spectra also supports this point. The parameter CH 2 /CH 3 ,evaluated by the ratio of A 2920 and A 2950 (A represents the area of the peak), was introduced to evaluatet he length of aliphatic side chains.…”
