Accumulation of trehalose in Saccharomyces cerevisiae growing on maltose is dependent on the TPS1 gene encoding the UDPglucose‐linked trehalose synthase

Abstract: When yeast strains were cultivated on maltose, the synthesis of trehalose already started in the exponential phase of growth, well before exhaustion of the sugar from the medium. This active pattern of trehalose accumulation was also observed in a maltose constitutive mutant strain growing on &cose. However, this accumulation was completely prevented by deletion of the TPSI gene coding for the catalytic subunit of the UDPgluccse-linked trehalose-6-phosphate synthase, indicating that no alternative pathway for … Show more

“…Our results also show that in C. albicans there is only one, or at least a major, trehalose-6-P synthase implicated in the synthesis of trehalose. This is also the situation in S. cerevisiae (40), although the existence of a minor trehalose-6-P synthase activity that uses ADP-glucose as a cosubstrate has been reported (15,39). The situation contrasts with that found in Aspergillus niger, where two trehalose-6-P synthases encoded by genes tpsA and tpsB have been detected.…”
